Leahair and Williams were found guilty of conspiracy to commit fraud, from January 2007 to March 2010, after a 12 week trial.

He issued doctored photographs of him superimposed in front of a Bentley and splashed out on flash cars, yachts and property.

George Williams put out doctored publicity material of him superimposed in front of a Bentley

In contrast, lawyers defending Leahair, of Warrington Road, Rainhill , claimed she earned around a year and lived in a modest house.

Tarquin McCalla, defending, suggested Williams was the manipulative man "calling the shots" and exploiting others from afar.

He said: "Miss Leahair I suggest was one of his victims in many ways.

"Her income went on her mortgage, iphone 5c replacement screen her everyday expenses and looking after her children."

He said Leahair's partner and the father of her 10 year old daughter died in 2008. Her dad died in 2010.

She has a 15 month old child with her new boyfriend, who will have to live with her mum, as he works shifts.

Mr McCalla said she suffered from severe anxiety and depression and now struggles to speak "such is the anguish and emotional trauma she is going through".

He added: "It was George Williams who has dragged Miss Leahair down and dragged her to the absolute pit of despair."

Audio released by Merseyside Police of two calls revealed the forceful techniques the gang used, including posing as the force to win over trust.

Judge Warnock told Leahair: "You appear to have no insight or remorse   rather you maintain the startling self delusion that you have not committed any criminal act."

He accepted she did not benefit financially to the same extent as Williams and had "more than your fair share of misfortune in your life".

But the judge said she had a "wholly misplaced trust" in Williams and remarkably her view of him remained "undimmed" despite "overwhelming evidence".

Judge Warnock said her assertions that Williams was "transparent and honest" and it was not a scam were "breathtaking in their naivety and delusion".

He said it was unfortunate she chose to remain silent during the trial, because he had not heard why she held these beliefs.

The judge said: "Perhaps in this regard you might like to ask yourself the question as to where the has actually gone."

Leahair showed no emotion as she was jailed and banned from being the director of any company for six years.

Sales rep Joanne Martin, 48, of Grosvenor Road, Prescot, described as one of Williams and Leahair's "footsoldiers", admitted two counts of fraud.

Judge Warnock today handed her two year's supervision with a three month home curfew from 8pm to 6am and ordered the mum of one to pay to each of her victims.
